A Book about Archabbot Norbert Legányi
A book by Archabbot Emeritus Asztrik Várszegi about his predecessor, Norbert Legányi, has been published. The title of the volume is: “My Task Is to Lead the Order through the Red Sea” – The Struggle of Norbert Legányi, Archabbot of Pannonhalma with the Communist State Power (1958–1969).
Norbert Legányi headed the archabbey during one of the most difficult periods in the modern history of the Benedictine order (1958–1969). The consistent, straightforward abbot soon found himself facing the ruthless machinery of the dictatorship, which, by using and manipulating the internal opposition of the order, forced him into an increasingly difficult situation. This ultimately led to his resignation. Archabbot Asztrik's book introduces the reader to the inner life and events of the restricted Benedictine order and the two Benedictine secondary schools, as well as the everyday life of the party state.
