The Patriarch of Constantinople Visited Our Archives

Accepting the invitation of the Archabbey in Pannonhalma, Patriarch Bartholomew I arrived in Hungary for a six-day visit on 20 September. His visit distinctly concentrated on ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue, in addition to promoting peace. He gave the main address of the international ecumenical conference – with the motto “Seek peace and pursue it!” – organised in Pannonhalma on 22 September.

His All Holiness expressed his wish that he and his retinue could visit our Archives and see its riches. During the solemn mass on 20 August 2000, Bartholomew I declared that Saint Stephen, our king is also venerated as a saint in the Eastern Church. Thus, it was not surprising that on entering our Archives Bartholomew I immediately pointed at Saint Stephen’s monogram on the letters-patent of Pannonhalma reading out: Stephanus Rex. Since the issue of the letters-patent in 1001, the monastic community of Pannonhalma have daily prayed “pro stabilitate regni nostri”. His All Holiness could also have a look at the charter of 1212 establishing the prayer-union between Saint Benedict’s monastery in Monte Cassino and Pannonhalma. In connection with the register of Saint Ladislaus, we recalled that the king’s daughter, Piroska known as Irene became the wife of the Emperor in Byzantium, then we looked up the Greek Psalter (Psalterium gallicanum, hebraicum, grecum) in the first Hungarian library-catalogue. The Patriarch could take the monastery’s 13th-century signet in his hand, he had a look at Liber ruber and the Tihany Deed of Foundation.

While staying in Hungary, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople visited Bakonybél, he presided the Divine Liturgy in the Basilica of Saint Martin in Pannonhalma, then on the last day of his visit, he gave a talk at the ecumenical and inter-religious conference entitled “Together for Our Common Home” organised by Pázmány Péter Catholic University and the Ludovica University of Public Service.
