Bazilica800 – An Exhibition on Abbot Uros and His Work
On 27 April, the Archabbey of Pannonhalma opened its this-year periodic exhibition, which is the central element of the Bazilica800 anniversary-year. The curators of the exhibition entitled Abbot Uros and His Work were Szovák Kornél, historian and Takács Imre, art historian. The exhibition inaugurated by Maróth Miklós, academician could be visited in the Archabbey’s exhibitory area.
The exhibition organised for the anniversary of the third monastic church’s consecration in 1224 introduces the personality of the builder with the help of archival documents and material remains. Uros is the best-known Hungarian prelate of the Arpadian age. More than 160 documents can be related to him and his activity, their decisive majority can be found in our Archives. He consciously employed the contemporary upward trend of the use of written records for the benefit of his abbey: he confirmed the monastery’s privileges with diplomas from papal and royal courts, he stabilized – even doubled – the abbey’s holdings through legal proceedings, purchasing, and documents of stock-taking. He constructed his church with the help of the growth of earnings. This exceptional person went to Rome six times, and he also took part in Andrew II’s campaign of the Holy Land.
